    In the tree pit, 250mm of clean and rounded aggregate was layered to the underside of the soil level with each layer encapsulated in a filter fleece to ensure only clean and filtered water passed through the component parts and into the main drainage.
    Expert opinion
    The FRA judges commented: “This project is a good example of a single supplier working with a design team to achieve an appropriate finish to an interesting scheme. The result is an extremely aesthetically pleasing and innovative design with good technical solutions, complex detailing and an environmentally pleasing appearance.”
    Shedkm architect Nick Birch added: “We got Icopal involved quite early on and they worked through all the details with us. I went to the factory several times with the client and they were frequently on site. It was about as complex as you can get since there were a number of different materials and junctions and to resolve them needed a lot of discussion and back and forth with drawings.
    “The green roof was essential to the whole project really. The apartments that overlook the courtyard are probably the best to have and it is space that has been used for events like barbecues and drinks parties. It is standing up very well.”

These factors associated to an increase on air capacity, due to fytofoams' light density, may positive affect the germination process and faster turfgrass re- establishment.
