Behind seawalls,
Benefil® displaces water to correct scouring or the loss of fines due to tidal 'lag'.
Compared to cement grout which can flow away and pollute and later simply funnel water elsewhere, Benefil® self-contains. It encapsulates rubble and later can allow filtered passage of water. Any escaping material floats and is easy to collect.

At quay walls,
problems often occur. Currents are formed, which cause subsidence of roads and undermine other building activities. Injecting Benefil® into the rinsed out area eliminates the water running underneath and stabilises the ground. This causes the ground pressure to rise and can be increased again after a few years if required. In one pressing a length of 10- 50 metres can be corrected.

Bow screws cause the damage at quay walls due to the ever-increasing shipping traffic. For several government institutions rinsing is therefore a frequent and difficult problem to control. Old quay walls or dam walls are rinsed where the upper surface and paving slowly but surely subside. Injecting Benefil® into the rinsed out areas stabilises the soil and prevents further rinsing. If the quay wall is closed, the ground pressure will possibly rise. Because of this, further injecting is necessary, where hardened injections are again put under an increasingly bigger pressure.

      British Waterways c/o Apex Construction
      Benefil injection of interstitial space between culvert and liner, to prevent water loss from the canal. The Benefil was modified for this project, so that its gelling time was reduced, enabling the Benefil to go off before being flushed out by the water pressure.

      Basingstoke Canal Authority
      The Walls of Lock 20 on the Basingstoke Canal were leaking badly, causing inconvenience to boaters and costing the canal authority money in lost water.
      GroundSafe loaded the polymer unit onto a canal boat moved 7 locks down to Lock 20, inaccessible by other routes.
      GroundSafe modified Uretek's Benefil RG30 /Benefil 3000 reducing its gelling time, then injected behind the lock wall using bespoke injection needles. After locating a series of voids and working back to the point of ingress, the leak was completely staunched.

Suter Pier, the central hub of the Port, had been founded on mixed hardcore fill, retained by a high perimeter seawall. By 2004 time and tide appeared to have washed out significant volumes of the fines from between the rocks.

      This had caused extensive voiding and had developed the risk of possible slab failure or collapse due to the very heavy storage loads put on the shed floor.

      The Construction Manager and Project Engineer for the Port accepted the tender of Grouting Plus Solutions to restore the support base for this enormous (over 5,000 m2) storage facility. Benefil® was the product selected to fill large interconnected voids under the floor slabs adjacent to the seawall.
      The Suter Pier project saw Grouting Plus Solutions inject Benefil® under approximately 1,000 m2 around the shed perimeter and the work was completed over a period of ten days in mid-2004. 210 m2 of Benefil® were injected, while the shed remained fully operational with various contents piled high. That included mountains of stock feed.
      All the time ships were berthing, unloading and loading at the cargo wharves that run along each side of Suter Pier Shed. There was virtually no interruption to the workings of the Port.
      For this work Benefil® was produced at a relative gravity of 50 kg/m3 to suit the high floor-loading requirement. (The density can be varied to suit other tasks: relative gravity of 22 kg/m3 suits the filling of fuel tanks that are to be made safe for abandonment and relative gravity of up to 70 kg/m3 may be produced to support heavier structures.)
      Combining economy, ease of application, lack of disruption and engineering strength, Benefil® was the right answer to the demands of this Townsville Port work.
