Benefil was chosen as the most environmentally-friendly solution for grouting works during upgrading of a marine causeway in Weston-super-Mare.

The causeway is part of the Severn Estuary Special Protection Area, and an important consideration was for the material chosen to be harmless for marine life. In addition, the speed and cost of the work compared favourably with cementitious grouting.

The Benefil team injected specialised lightweight polymer resin into voids under the 70-year-old 220m causeway which runs between the sea wall and Knightstone Island. Access was difficult, as the causeway is submerged at high tide, so the Benefil team mobilised portable pumping equipment between tides.

Work was completed in 3-4 weeks, allowing further work on the causeway to be carried out.
